Choosing Camp Lighting

Good camp lighting usually means two pieces: a headlamp that keeps your hands free and a lantern that lights up the table or tent. Brightness matters less than many listings suggest. A lantern with a dimmable low mode and long runtime is often more useful around camp than the brightest setting.

Our guides compare stated lumens, runtime on each mode, battery type, charging options such as USB-C or solar, and any water-resistance rating the brand publishes. We note when a light uses a built-in battery you cannot replace, and when a red light mode is included for keeping your night vision. Runtime claims are usually measured on the lowest setting, so we say which mode a figure refers to when the listing does.
